What We Handle Under Emergency Electrician

We book jobs Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and we stay available around the clock for genuine emergencies. Here is what earns that second category.

Burning, arcing or smoking. A scorched plate, a brown mark around an outlet, that unmistakable stink of cooked plastic. Turn it off at the switchboard, then ring.

Live parts you can reach. A broken outlet, a fitting hanging by its cable, a damaged lead. Anything a child could touch is an emergency, whatever the hour.

A board that has given up. Main switch down and nothing brings it back. Or protection that drops out the instant you reset it, which is a fault, not a nuisance.

No power at all. If the whole street is dark, the network owns it and waiting is genuinely the answer. If your place alone is out, everything from your switchboard in is ours.

Water meeting power. Water running into a fitting, or a soaked outlet, stays live and dangerous while looking like nothing much.

Six Signs Your Home Is Asking for an Urgent Call-Out

Plenty of faults are fine to leave until a normal booking. These six are not, and the difference matters.

  • Something smells like hot plastic and you cannot work out where from.
  • A switch plate or an outlet is warm to touch, or has gone brown around the edges.
  • Push the safety switch back up and it drops straight out again.
  • Lights are flickering across several rooms at once rather than in one fitting.
  • A wall, a switch plate or the board itself is buzzing or crackling.
  • Half your place has gone dead while your neighbours still have their lights on.

Urgent Call-Outs in Manly Homes

Two of Manly's three big building waves are old enough to matter when it goes wrong at 3am.

There is the pre-1940 stock, the terraces and the early flats. Then the 1960s to 1980s wave that filled the suburb out, and the wiring in both has been altered and worked around by decades of other people.

That is why the fault is so rarely where the symptom is. A dead outlet in a back bedroom starts at a junction someone made in a ceiling in 1974, and staring at the outlet will never tell you that.

So an urgent call in a place of this vintage is mostly diagnosis. We isolate the faulty circuit, bring the rest of your home back to life, then chase the cause with test gear instead of assumptions.

The repair is usually the quick part. Finding what to repair is the job you are actually paying for.

The Factors Behind an After-Hours Quote

A fault nobody has seen yet cannot be priced from a phone call. The variables, though, are always the same five.

  • The hour. Work at 2am costs more than identical work at 2pm, and that gets said up front.
  • Whether you want a make-safe tonight and the repair later, or the lot in one visit.
  • The hunt. On wiring that has been altered for eighty years, finding it is the real unknown.
  • What turns up once it is found: a burnt termination, a failed circuit, a board past arguing with.
  • Access to the board and to whatever sits behind the fault, especially in a block.

One thing worth knowing before you ring anyone at all: your call is triaged by a licensed sparkie rather than a call centre reading a script. The repair price is fixed and written before that work starts, and we do not charge by the hour.

How the Job Runs and How Long It Takes

  1. Triage on the phone. A licensed electrician takes your call, works out what is going on, and tells you what to isolate long before anyone reaches you.
  2. Make it safe. The danger goes first and the faulty circuit gets isolated, so your home can be alive around us while we work.
  3. Find it properly. Testing, not guessing. Here is the honest range: some faults surrender in twenty minutes, some take a couple of hours.
  4. Repair, test, certify. The fix goes in, it is tested before we sign off, and the paperwork follows for anything notifiable.

One visit covers most urgent calls. If the part is not with us, we make it safe, say plainly what remains, and come back to finish it.

Standards and Paperwork, Explained Simply

Urgent work is held to the same wiring rules as planned work. AS/NZS 3000 has no after-hours clause, so a repair done at 3am gets tested exactly like a repair done at 3pm.

Where the repair is notifiable electrical work, a certificate of compliance for electrical work is lodged with NSW Fair Trading, and you get your copy.

If all we do is make the place safe until a proper repair can happen, we say that in writing rather than pretend the job is finished.

One rule matters more than the rest tonight. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, so if something is arcing, turn it off at the switchboard and leave it there.

The Difference on an After-Hours Job

Ring at midnight and a licensed sparkie picks up, not a booking script. Where the answer is isolate one circuit and go back to bed, that is what you will be told, with a normal booking tomorrow.

Not everything that feels urgent is urgent, and we would rather say so than sell you a night call-out.

Diane put it in her review that we kept her informed and squeezed her job in when she needed it at short notice. That is the standard, at any hour.

Urgent Call-Outs Across Manly and Surrounding Areas

A night call often ends at the board, so it pairs with switchboard upgrades once the sun is up. Where the wiring itself is what failed, that becomes a job for a residential electrician, and if the fault sits on the supply side, only Level 2 work can touch it.

Night or day, we cover Manly and the Northern Beaches around it: Fairlight, Balgowlah and Manly Vale.

Common questions

Common After-Hours Call-Out FAQs

Six questions that turn up at odd hours.

Do you supply the materials or can I buy my own?

At two in the morning, we supply them. The vans are stocked with switchgear, cable and test gear for precisely this reason, and a dark hallway is a poor place to start shopping. If the urgent fix later turns into planned work, you are welcome to buy your own gear for that part and we will fit it.

Is my older place suitable for emergency electrical work?

Older places are where most urgent calls come from, so yes. What changes is the diagnosis rather than the repair: pre-war and post-war wiring gives up in less obvious ways, and half the work is finding the fault rather than fixing it. We would rather spend the first hour with a tester than guess and hand you a bill for the wrong thing.

Is a Certificate of Compliance included with emergency work?

Yes, whenever the repair counts as notifiable work, and it is not an optional extra. A certificate of compliance for electrical work is lodged with NSW Fair Trading and your copy follows. A make-safe on its own is not notifiable, so you get photos and a written explanation instead, and the certificate follows once the repair is done.

Does emergency electrical work have to be done by a licensed sparkie?

Yes, and never more so than in an emergency. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and a fault that is already arcing is the worst possible moment to learn why that rule exists. Turn it off at the switchboard, keep people away from it, and call someone licensed.

Can an emergency repair be done without turning off power all day?

Almost always. The usual pattern is to isolate the faulty circuit, get the rest of your place live again, then work on the dead one. You often end up with the fridge and the lights running within the first half hour, even if the full repair takes longer.

What does an emergency call-out usually cost?

It turns on the hour, the fault and what making it safe involves, so nobody honest quotes it blind down the phone. The model, though, we can promise. A licensed sparkie triages it first, then the repair carries a fixed written price before work begins, and we do not charge by the hour.
